Sustainability in fashion: the metric by which several established and up-and-coming brands are measured. So much so, that there are a plethora of websites that provide side-by-side rankings and indices, comparing brands on their commitment to sustainability and transparency in the ethics inherent in their supply chains. Recently, I had the great fortune of listening to two extremely inspirational women within the luxury industry speak at a conference in Madrid, and their statements surrounding the ties between longevity, sustainability, and luxury really resonated with me.
Leila is committed to creating social value through the manufacturing and sales of the products in her brand, LXMI. The way she puts it: “If you’re going to spend so much money on a luxury item, you sure would expect it to be doing some social good in the world.” LXMI provides organic skincare products to consumers, and when consumers purchase these items, they can be assured that they are supporting the women of East Africa; providing them with fair wages to produce their products. And in fact, the products are sourced from ingredients within the workers’ own terrain.

Assunta spoke about the longevity of the relationship between customer and brand and how much of Chanel’s efforts go in maintaining just that. Building off of this, it was Leila who actually mentioned that when a customer buys a piece from a brand that values high quality craftsmanship, these pieces are often passed down generation after generation are not easily disposed of because they are seen as valuable investments, thus owing to their longevity. Not only did this idea support that luxury fashion, when in the hands of consumers, can help improve the fashion industry’s sustainability rankings, but it made me realize why luxury fashion is and forever will be the future.

I left feeling reassured that my investments in luxury fashion items, which I previously might have regarded as “splurges,” were well made. I realized that not only are these the items that I consistently go to when I have no clue what to wear, but are also the most comfortable, and well-crafted ones I own. I have such a deep relationship with each of those items, and I know that my children will too one day. After all, a lot of the luxury items I do own, are ones that I haven’t even purchased myself–they are my mother and grandmother’s Chanel sunglasses, Louis Vuitton bag, and wearing them is the greatest pleasure because I can carry on their legacy while owing to the fact that I did not have to support a company that does not pay their workers nearly enough just to acquire something that was “in style” or “a fashion need.”
I hope I can inspire you to look deeper into companies, whether luxury or not, that are transparent about being sustainable and socially responsible so that your purchases are actually working towards a better tomorrow.
