Honestly, I thought it was the cheesiest thing ever. When I was brainstorming themes 3 years ago for my sweet 16, I decided to ask for my family’s input because I just couldn’t find one that fit me and my personality well. It was my mother, then, who suggested VOGUE. I immediately was against the thought, and passed it off thinking, “Who am I to be associating myself with a firm as large and reputable as VOGUE? Since VOGUE is the most tasteful thing to ever have graced this planet, copying it would make my event far too fake and cheesy.” Looking back now, however, I couldn’t have been happier with submitting to my mother’s idea. I realized I was just scared to admit to my affinity for fashion, taste, and class, and was afraid to show the world what I was really all about. The theme VOGUE really encapsulated so many things I value in life–opinion, art, fashion, taste, and more. Every single aspect of the event, from the invitation to the decor, was designed and conceptualized by me–from the black velvet tablecloths, the VOGUE postcards in picture-frames as centerpieces, the dessert table, and of course, the step-and-repeat banner. Looking back at this made me identify with myself once again. Sometimes looking at our big moments from the past can help us feel a little bit more like ourselves on days when we feel lost. 🙂
