Copenhagen fashion week street stylers called it—plaid is officially back. And, let’s face it, stripes never REALLY go out of style. I love the interplay between geometry and fashion, and lines are the most subtle yet effective way to give a look a bit of a modern art effect. Based on recent outfits I’ve created, here are 3 ideas to help you pair your plaids and style your stripes!
1. Featherweight Stripes and Animal Prints
Animal print is quite literally the hottest new addition to any outfit. While pairing it with a striped item is probably more on the bold side, I always say that it’s better to be daring with style than to play it too safe. Life’s about experimenting, taking risks, and having fun with yourself and your style! In this look, I paired a pink featherweight striped collared button-down with a leopard print blouse, and wore a pink handbag, heels, and pins to match. Here’s a quick breakdown:

2. The Schoolgirl Plaid Effect
I definitely woke up the day I chose this outfit remembering my good old elementary school days. I went to a private school up until the fifth grade, and I remember being so frustrated having to wear the same exact uniform day after day–to the point where I actually thanked my parents for shifting me to a school where I could wear whatever I wanted later on. I never would’ve thought the day would come where I would voluntarily dress the same way as the schoolgirl uniform days, and actually find myself missing it! I guess, looking back, I appreciate the look, now, so much more: it’s classic, and can be made a bit edgy depending on the pieces you own. I was able to add some edge with a cool pair of sunglasses 🙂 Here’s what I wore:

Ann Taylor Emerald Green Sweater
3. Striped Rainbow with Black
This is a sweater I bought a few seasons ago and wore during my very first trip to NYFW last year. I remember vividly wearing this when I went backstage at the Tibi show, and because it’s got such a special sentiment attached to it, I don’t wear it too often. Though, recently, I’ve been feeling extra playful. I remember waking up scrolling through street style images from this fashion month, and feeling inspired not only due to the surge of bright colors I saw, but also because going through these style shots brought me back to fashion week in general, when I wore this sweater. Of course, I didn’t want to wear it the exact same way I wore it during NYFW SS19, so I figured I’d pull on a black scarf and belt it up! I was wearing:
Uniqlo x JW Anderson Striped Sweater
Yves Saint Laurent Black Wool/Cashmere Scarf
Vintage Belt
Hope this inspired you to pull out those plaid and striped items from the back of your closet. Stay stylish, always 🙂
